With an aim of enhancing community resilience, the project was to improve water infrastructures by rehabilitating 1 shallow well and constructing an elevated water tank, installation of a solar powered hybrid systems and rehabilitation of strategic water catchment for livestock watering through cash for work for 30 days in both Somalia and Kenya. The project aimed to create jobs for drought affected and impoverished youth by engaging them in rehabilitation of 3 strategic water catchments through cash for work for 30 days. Livelihood emergency intervention component involved provision of emergency food voucher to 1400 households in all target areas.
The emergency livestock treatment targeted 120 vulnerable pastoral households. Livestock treatment intervention targeted households that were decapitated by the drought hence unable to pay cost of animals’ treatment especially those having below 10-25 heads of livestock.
The recovery program involved business women support for 120 petty traders, support to 15 riverine farmer’s groups through provision of farm inputs comprising maize seeds, cowpea seeds, Sudan grass, subsidy fuel, water pump sets in the target areas in order to realize immediate impact in short term and facilitate the target communities recovery from the effects of the (2016 -2017) drought. The project targeted Mandera east and Lafey districts in Mandera county, Kenya and Elwak. Belet Hawa and Garbararey district, Gedo region, Somalia.
