Urgent Humanitarian Appeal for Flood-Affected Population in Mandera County, Kenya

NAPAD, a local organization operating in Mandera County, is committed to serving the nomadic communities through humanitarian and resilience-building efforts. We aim to promote sustainable peace and human development amongst vulnerable communities in the Horn of Africa by advancing social justice, economic resilience, and climate change adaptation.

Urgent Humanitarian Situation:

I wish to bring your attention to the critical humanitarian situation in Mandera County, Kenya. Recent devastating floods have impacted and displaced thousands of households in our operational areas. As of November 10th, 34,845 households were affected in Mandera, Kenya, with 13,301 persons displaced and needing food aid, water, sanitation and hygiene, and protection interventions.

According to the sitrep report of the Council of Governors, from November 28th to December 4th, 391 AWD cases were reported in Garissa, Kwale, Mandera, and Wajir counties. Similarly, the same report said increased malaria cases in Mandera County (539 suspected cases with 10 confirmed). Tragically, seven flood-related deaths have been reported in Mandera County.

NAPAD’s Urgent Appeal:

Immediate and targeted action is crucial to prevent loss of lives and disease outbreaks among the children, women, and men, affected by the floods. At the forefront of relief efforts in flood-affected regions, Nomadic Assistance for Peace and Development (NAPAD) urgently seeks partnerships to provide humanitarian support. The communities we serve are facing pressing challenges that demand immediate attention, and your assistance will make a profound impact on their lives.

Our Critical Needs Include:

  • Provision of emergency Food Aid for 5400 displaced households.
  • Provide safe drinking water through urgent rehabilitation, regular chlorination of water sources, and water trucking services where necessary.
  • Construction of 150 Emergency Latrines at the evacuation site of displaced households.
  • Provision of 9000 mosquito nets to vulnerable households especially those with pregnant women and children under five years to protect them against vector-borne diseases.
  • Provision of 5400 Hygiene Kits for displaced households to mitigate against AWDs/Cholera.

Foodstuff, medicine and fuel are unavailable since the current floods have adversely affected the seven major roads within Mandera, Wajir, Garissa and Tana rivers. The critical ones include Mwingi- Madogo-Garissa, the Madogo junction-Bura-Hola Garse, Malindi -Mombasa, and Nuno-Madogashe – Wajir- Mandera, which is impassable. Most dams and pans have broken their banks. Many school infrastructures have collapsed, and IDPs have used others for habitation.

All farms’ access roads along the river have been destroyed by the floods, thus making farms inaccessible. Looking beyond the immediate crisis, NAPAD envisions the urgent need to rehabilitate and reconstruct water sources and water supply systems in villages, learning spaces, sanitation infrastructures, health facilities, and irrigation systems crucial for agro-pastoral subsistence farming. Additionally, there may be a need to conduct repairs to water pumping systems.

How you can Help:

Your support is invaluable in saving lives and rebuilding communities. We urge you to consider contributing to our relief efforts and partnering with NAPAD to impact the lives of those struggling to survive during and in the aftermath of this devastating flood.
